Our Year 5 and 6 pupils have been working hard to achieve the Campaign for school gardening Level 4 certificate. They have constructed two seed tray holders, using battery operated power tools, under the supervision of a member of staff. At the same time, two of our Year 6 girls worked on the construction of several ‘wigwams’ to support our French Climbing and Runner beans.
We have also been very busy with planting out seeds into pots and seed trays in the greenhouse, planting seeds into children prepared seed drills.and re-potting several plants when they became ready.
We have successfully planted out into our planters the following crops/plants - potatoes, strawberries, a mixed selection of herbs, red cabbage, ordinary cabbage, cauliflower, leeks, onions, spring onions, 3 varieties of runner beans, broad beans, dwarf beans, French climbing beans, ,3 varieties of beetroot, 4 varieties of tomatoes, peppers, courgettes, cucumbers, rhubarb, Italian and French lettuce, chard, soft fruit (raspberries, red berries, black berries, red and black currant, gooseberries, red and white grapes and kiwi fruit) and Pak Choi.
On Thursday 21 May, the Yorkshire Water Board are sending in 20 personnel to re-create our borders and raised planters as part of their 1,000,000 Green Fingers initiative.
On Friday 22 May a selection of pupils from all classes, supervised by staff and Garden Club members, will be planting out a variety of plants, flowers etc into their own special areas. They will then have the responsibility of maintaining their areas and keeping records of the plant growth.y
